FAQ Car Key Fob

FAQs

Read the answers to some of the most popular questions.

I work on almost all types of fobs and transponder keys. Many fobs need to be programmed since they have a tiny chip that connects the key with the ignition system.

Time time required is a standard procedure.

It depends how busy I am at the counter with other customers when you arrive. If you want to call ahead, I can give you a better idea on the length of time. As a general rule, I would say about 30-60 minutes.

Different vehicle fobs, or keys, have different costs.

For sure, my prices to replace a key or fob, or to repair a key or fob, are significantly less than going to an automobile dealership.

I have a large inventory of box and keys which means I can supply you with what you require fairly quickly and at a reasonable fee.

Yes, I repair or replace transponder keys and remote key fobs. Most vehicles manufactured since around 2000 are equipped with transponder keys as a standard security feature.

Many modern vehicles come with remote key fobs that may also include transponder technology.

Basically, the tiny chip inside the key/fob is the important piece and I can access and adjust, or replace, those chips as necessary.

 Types Of Vehicle Fobs

When people think of a fob they think about features like remote starting, panic alarm, and keyless entry.

- Keyless Entry: Allows users to unlock the car without physically using a key.
- Remote Start: Enables starting the engine from a distance, which is useful for preconditioning the vehicle's interior temperature.
- Panic Alarm: Activates an alarm system in case of emergencies.

There are three categories of fobs that have distinct functions:

- Standard Key Fobs: Basic models that allow locking and unlocking of doors.
- Smart Key Fobs: Advanced versions that enable keyless entry and ignition.
- Proximity Key Fobs: These detect the owner's presence and allow for automatic unlocking and starting without pressing any buttons

 Transponder Keys vs FOBs

There are differences between key fobs and transponder keys. With this  understanding, you are better able to distinguish between car security and functionality.

A transponder key contains a microchip that communicates with the vehicle's ignition system. It is essential for starting the engine, as the car will not start without the correct transponder signal.

A remote key fob, also known as a key fob or fob,  allows users to lock and unlock their vehicle remotely. This key does not contain the technology, which is a specific chip, to start the engine unless it is integrated with a transponder chip.

The third type is a hybrid and is called a remote transponder key. This key combines both security and functionality into one device, known as a remote transponder key. With this key you have the remote locking/unlocking feature plus the transponder chip necessary for starting the vehicle.

 Best For You

H2

There are four factors to consider when thinking about the best ket for you.

1. Vehicle Age

Transponder Keys: Most vehicles since around 2000 have transponder keys as a standard security feature. If your car is newer, it likely uses a transponder key.

Remote Key Fobs: Many modern vehicles come with remote key fobs that may also include transponder technology. If your car has keyless entry or push-to-start features, it probably uses a remote fob.

2. Key Functions

Physical Appearance: Inspect your key. Transponder keys usually have a plastic head that contains the chip, while traditional metal keys do not. If your key has a visible chip or is thicker, it may be a transponder key.

Fob Features: If your key includes buttons for locking/unlocking doors or starting the engine remotely, it is likely a remote key fob. Some fobs also contain a transponder chip for starting the car.

3. Starting Issues
If you can insert the key but the car won't start, it might indicate an issue with the transponder chip not communicating with the vehicle's immobilizer system. It can also mean the battery is not working properly and needs to be replaced.
